Computer-based VoIP is one of the two types of VoIP, the other one being the phone-based alternative. If you’re aiming to make the most of the free calls most VoIP providers offer today, you should know that with computer-based VoIP you either have to download a program or plug in a USB device to make and receive your phone calls.

If you’re just a regular “netizen,” you can simply go with the former because you’ll have to pay for the device with the latter. A lot of rumors can be heard about call quality with certain VoIP providers but it’s mostly up to the user when it comes to that aspect of computer-based VoIP.

Line clarity will depend largely on your Internet connection speed, but the quality of your headset or speaker and microphone will affect it as well.

Since it’s usually free when it’s PC-to-PC, you can maximize talking with your friends while you’re online. If you and your friends have webcams, it will be even more fun because you can video chat.

Your computer’s available memory is a factor too; low memory is the main reason many people experience frequent disconnections, and not because, as they say, “we’re getting free calls so this must be the price we pay.” You can try Voip providers that provide their own software or if you have a text IM client such as Google Talk, Skype, Yahoo! Messenger or MSN Messenger, you can take advantage of not just its chat feature but also its voice and video conference features.
